My comic follows one of my close friend’s struggles with her eating disorder and its effects on her college experience culminating in her decision to take medical leave. The beautiful outside of the book conceals the chaos within, mirroring her own attempts to mask her struggles. I am profoundly grateful for her bravery in sharing her
story with me, and I hope this comic encourages others to advocate for themselves and seek the help they need.

This comic is about the diagnosis journey of a friend who was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections) during her sophomore year of high school. I showed her turning into a panda because her symptoms started overnight, and I was inspired by Gregor's overnight transition in Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis.

Often, medical systems look for answers about why and how things happen, but there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding my grandpa's death. My comic explores this uncertainty, along with what was left unsaid.

My comic, Trials and Tribulations, follows the process a patient has to go through when seeking treatment for their mental health using medications. Throughout the story, the main character attends many doctors’ appointments and the readers get to see not only what the experience was like for him physically, but also internally through graphics of how the drugs effected his neurons and brain chemistry.

An account of the resource
My comic reflects on the recent medical history of my 84-year-old
grandfather, Bob Oda. My grandpa was diagnosed with stage 4
colon cancer in August 2021, just a few weeks before I left for
college. My grandparents have always played a significant role in
my life, making this diagnosis much harder to deal with as a
family. I decided to make this comic about my grandpa because I
wanted to show the impact that cancer has on those diagnosed,
and their families. I also wanted to reflect on the strength and
courage it takes one to endure such treatments.

An account of the resource
My grandpa entered the field of cardio-thoracic surgery during its infancy. He established the cardiac surgery residency program at Massachusetts General Hospital, founded heart transplant programs at the University of Michigan and the University of Iowa, and performed the first pediatric heart transplants in both Iowa and Michigan. What he is most proud of, however, and what I hope to honor with this project, are the relationships he built with his colleagues, patients, and students.

An account of the resource
My comic touches on the experiences of anxiety diagnosis, and the similarities and differences of diagnosis in childhood and adulthood. It explores patient voice at different ages, doctor/provider-patient relationships, and highlights the challenges that may come (for all of the various parties involved) with diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders. My comic is based on the experiences of my friend who was diagnosed with anxiety during college, a process that has allowed her to make the connection between her childhood "illness" and her current mental health journey.

This comic maps the experiences of my friend Mathew, who has an arthritic condition called Ankylosing Spondylitis and who I interviewed for the creation of this story. The comic focuses on the two years in which Mathew was bedridden due to joint pain caused by his condition, and how that time affected his mental health in addition to his physical health.
